Anger — Calgary & Alberta
Anger counselling
Anger is rarely the whole story. We look at what sits underneath it and build responses you can live with afterwards.
Anger is usually a messenger, not the message. When it is the only feeling that gets out, the ones underneath never get heard.
What anger is really telling you
Anger tends to arrive fast, and it usually arrives on top of something quieter — hurt, fear, shame, exhaustion, or the sense that no one is listening. It is the feeling that makes you feel strong when you actually feel powerless.
The trouble is the cost. Anger spends your relationships to buy short-term relief. It leaves your spouse cautious, your kids watchful, your co-workers careful around you, and you carrying regret that hardens into more anger.
It also shows up in the body: jaw and shoulders locked, sleep broken, blood pressure up, energy gone by the evening. Many people describe running hot all day and then crashing flat.
Sound familiar?
How anger may be affecting you
- You go from calm to zero-to-sixty faster than the situation warrants
- Afterwards you feel ashamed, then defensive when it is brought up
- Family members walk on eggshells or go quiet when you come in the room
- Small things — traffic, a tone of voice, a dropped dish — set the day off
- You hold it in all day at work and let it out at home
- You use silence, sarcasm or the cold shoulder instead of raising your voice
- You have said things you would never say if you could take them back
- Alcohol, driving or slammed doors have started to worry you
How we work on it together
We start by mapping your pattern honestly — the triggers, the early body signals, the thought that lights the fuse, and the payoff the anger gives you. Once you can see it coming, you have somewhere to intervene.
From there we use cognitive behavioural tools to challenge the interpretations that justify the blow-up, plus regulation skills you can actually use in the moment rather than only in theory. We practise repair too, because most damage is done in the aftermath, not the outburst.
If the anger traces back to old wounds, grief, chronic pain, sleep loss or a marriage under strain, we work on that root rather than only managing symptoms. Sessions happen in the office, at your kitchen table on a house call, on the trail, or online.

Questions
Common questions
- Do I have to be court-ordered or in trouble to come in?
- No. Most people who come for anger work have simply had enough of the aftermath — the silence at supper, the apologies, the sense of being someone they do not want to be.
- Will you tell me anger is wrong?
- No. Anger itself is information. It usually means something matters, something feels unjust, or something hurts. The work is about what you do with it, not about shaming you for having it.
- Can my spouse come with me?
- Sometimes that helps and sometimes individual work comes first. We decide together, and couples sessions are available if the pattern is mostly happening between the two of you.
- How long does this take?
- Many people notice a difference in how they catch themselves within a handful of sessions. Deeper patterns, especially ones learned in childhood, take longer and are worth the time.
