Depression — Calgary & Alberta

Depression counselling

For the heaviness that makes ordinary days feel like work. Practical, evidence-based steps back toward energy, meaning and purpose.

Depression is not weakness and it is not a lack of faith. It is a condition that flattens motivation, memory, sleep and hope — and it responds to treatment.

What depression does to a life

Depression is quieter than anxiety. It rarely announces itself. It arrives as a slow narrowing — fewer calls returned, fewer plans made, less interest in the things that used to matter, until the smaller life starts to feel like the only life available.

It lies convincingly. It tells you that you are a burden, that this is permanent, that people are only being polite. Because those thoughts come in your own voice, they sound like insight rather than symptoms.

It also lands in the body: broken or excessive sleep, appetite changes, aching heaviness, a mind that will not hold a page. In the foothills and on farms and job sites, it often shows up first as "I just can't get going anymore."

How depression may be affecting you

  • Waking early or sleeping far too much, and never feeling rested
  • Things you used to enjoy now feel like effort with no reward
  • Concentration and memory have slipped at work or at home
  • You are irritable or short with the people closest to you
  • You have quietly pulled back from church, friends and family
  • Self-criticism runs constantly in the background
  • Appetite, weight or drinking has shifted noticeably
  • You are going through the motions and hoping nobody notices

How we work on it together

The work is practical. We use cognitive behavioural therapy to catch and test the thoughts depression treats as facts, and behavioural activation to rebuild momentum in small, achievable steps — movement, light, contact with people, one restored routine at a time.

Sleep gets direct attention, because broken sleep keeps depression fed. Where insomnia is a driver, we can use CBT-i, a structured approach built specifically for sleep.

We also make room for meaning. If your faith is part of your life, it belongs in this work — including the honest questions depression raises. Sessions happen in the office, at your table on a house call, walking a quiet trail, or online anywhere in Alberta.

Questions

Common questions

Is it depression, or am I just tired?
That is worth talking through. Burnout, grief, chronic pain, thyroid issues and long winters can all look like depression. Part of the first sessions is sorting out what you are actually dealing with.
Do I need medication?
Some people do well with counselling alone, others do best with both. Prescribing is your doctor's role, not mine, and I am glad to work alongside your physician either way.
What if I have no energy for homework?
Then we start smaller. The approach is built to work with low energy, not to demand energy you do not have yet.
What if I am having thoughts of ending my life?
Please reach out now rather than waiting for an appointment — call or text 988 in Canada, or 911 in an emergency. Bring it to session too; it can be said out loud here without panic or judgement.
